Cosmetic Plastic Surgery In New York City:
Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)
Prominent ears can influence a person’s overall appearance and are often a source of embarrassment for many individuals. If you feel self-conscious about the size, shape or prominence of your ears, Otoplasty will help.
Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a form of cosmetic surgery that improves the aesthetic appearance of the external portion of the ear (Pinna), and can take many forms, such as;
- Ear Pinning – bringing the ears closer to the head
- Reducing the size of the lobe
- Reshaping various bends in the ear
Ear Pinning
The aim of Ear Pinning is to position the ears closer to the head so they are not noticeably sticking out to the sides. The general approach is with a hidden incision behind the ear. The shape of the cartilage/ear is modified and positioned closer to the scalp with permanent sutures. The technique depends on the shape of the ear and its relative position to the posterior scull.
Reduction
Earlobes tend to grow and sag with age, also developing deep creases. Or as is increasingly the case, earlobes can stretch from piercings and heavy jewellery. The earlobe size may be reduced in conjunction with Ear Pinning or at a later date.
Reshaping
Many patients who elect to have Otoplasty have asymmetrical ears from birth, or have sustained injury to the outer ear in an accident. Reshaping involves altering the cartilage under the skin to restore symmetry and a natural shape to the ear.
Preparation
As with all surgeries performed by Dr. Born, patients are prescribed supplements to take before and after the surgery, to help prepare and recover faster and without complications.
Procedure length
The procedure takes two to three hours while you’re asleep or under sedation. You will be allowed to leave the same day.
Recovery
Small stitches are removed a week after surgery. Bruising is generally dissipates by after 10 days, but some residual bruising can remain up to three weeks. A wrap dressing is worn for the first week and a head band (which may be changed) is worn for two weeks after surgery, after which the patient can return to normal activity. We suggest that patients who regularly colour their hair do so one week prior to surgery, as hair coloring should be postponed for at least four weeks following this procedure.
There are some general risks intrinsic to all surgical procedures; please take a moment to review them.
The Result
The final result of Otoplasty is improvement of the aesthetics of the outer ear in its shape, size and relative position to the head.
It is important to note that each surgery is tailored to meet the unique needs and features of individual patients.
What other patients want
Many patients combine Otoplasty with other procedures such as Rhinoplasty, or Body Contouring to achieve an overall enhancement of their appearance.
